Community Events (by Deborah)

On Sunday 3rd July Kitty and I took part in East Reading’s Community Festival in Palmer Park. Despite it not being spectacularly well promoted there were quite a few families there and the weather was good (at one point I was concerned that people might either get burned to death by scorching sun or be huddled under umbrellas but neither thing happened).

We had a ten minute slot and had been asked to perform and do a bit of teaching so that’s what we did. Once handed the microphone I requested that people be brave enough to get up and have a go and some even complied. The best part about that kind of event is the laughing that people do as they have a go at the moves.

I noticed that someone from every range was having a go, from children of about ten up to more mature ladies….that’s what we like.

And as can always be predicted, getting everyone to shimmy for a couple of minutes is a great way to finish off some teaching at an event like this – they’ve done a couple of easy moves and you can see they feel they’ve mastered something, so the shimmy is a good way to push just a teeny bit more out of them.

As we were leaving one of the organisers ran up behind us to say thank you and asked if we’d be able to do some more workshops sometime. Of course the answer was a resounding yes…we do so like to share the belly dance love.
